A gentle and simple evolution – beautiful, breathable, bio-based paint

29th April 2024

From March 1st, Atelier Ellis elevates our beautiful True Matt Emulsion to a bio-based formulation.

This evolution of our paint base includes a newly developed, beautiful, natural based binder – which is also new to the UK.

Created from bio-based materials including vegetable oil produced from waste, sugar and bio ethanol, our new binder improves both the materiality and the performance of our already exceptional quality paint.

With no compromise on breathability or minimal VOC levels, we also offer complete transparency of our ingredients and source locations. We source over 90% of our materials from the UK, with the remainder coming from Europe. Our slow and simple manufacturing culture is grounded in non-industrial production methods.

With a unique colour palette created by Cassandra Ellis, our bio-based True Matt Emulsion is exceptionally matt, virtually VOC-free and clean smelling. It is suitable for lime and gypsum plaster and is fully breathable, washable and safe for all rooms, including children’s spaces. Two coats are required for perfect coverage and no primer is needed.

“How we consume affects not only an individual’s life but also our society and the environment. When I started Atelier Ellis Paint, I only wanted to make the best quality paint in beautiful, unique colours with the least impact possible. I purposely avoid using words like sustainable and eco-friendly – they have lost their power and value.

I believe in true stewardship – taking care, being in service, producing what we need, and communicating the benefits clearly and simply. The ultimate stewardship is to make best quality paint in unique colours. As an independent business, we are free to choose best practice and materials, while manufacturing in a fair and equal way.” That’s why I’ve formulated our evolved, bio-based True Matt Emulsion to be better for people and their homes."

No matter what we do, making paint requires energy. We choose to carefully formulate and manufacture our own paint bases in the UK. This means we have complete control over what goes into it and how we make it.

We use minimal smart science to make our beautiful breathable bio-based paint. It is free from heavy metals, glycols, micro-plastics and azo dyes.

Note to the Editor

Atelier Ellis makes quiet, beautiful and handmade paint to help people tell the story of their home. Founded by Cassandra Ellis in 2018, Atelier Ellis is a human-scale business that looks for reminders of humanity in everything they do.

An independent maker of colour, Atelier Ellis formulates, produces, and sells their high- quality paint from their Bath factory and townhouse store. The paint collection reflects a new classicism that is neither minimalist nor traditional. Embracing a gracefully joyful aesthetic, the 107 unique colours are deeply rooted in the natural world, as well as personal memories, marks, and fragments.

Inspired by the way we live in nature, in cities and society, the distinctive shades are designed to create quiet, joyful backdrops to people’s homes and lives, helping them tell their unique stories of home in the way they choose.

Atelier Ellis invests in honest materials and responsible, small-batch production. Carefully formulated to be completely breathable, with trace VOC and full of natural materials, the water-based, deeply pigmented colours create safe and beautiful homes.
