Maps of Colour: A path towards a personal colour palette

22nd July 2024

A river running, the slick of a horse’s rump, a painting of flowers, Keats, friendships, the flight of a lark and a brown paper parcel tied up with string-  all primeval and real sources of joy. And they say “this is me, this is home”.

Atelier Ellis, makers of beautiful, breathable bio-based paint, launch self-guided colour consultancy through their Maps of Colour.

The new Maps of Colour place customers at the centre of it all. Choosing colour is intimate. By evolving a paid for service into a complimentary self-guided toolkit, Maps of Colour give people the agency and support to choose the correct colours for them and their home.

For every colour in our collection, Cassandra Ellis, colourist, and founder of Atelier Ellis, has arranged a family of eight that work together beautifully. Two whites, two neutrals, two mid-tones, a deep and a surprise.

I began Atelier Ellis with a deep-rooted need to help people tell their story of home. Using colour and incredible paint as a conduit for conversations on place and the joyfulness and valuable luck of having a choice.  Most people only need guidance and support to know which colours work together.  I believe that being your own advisor with colour, nuance and detail feels to me, to be the right way forward.”

Organised by page in keeping with our hand painted Colour Chart, customers will find colour directions for every colour.  Choosing a lead colour, they then select as few or as many shades from the eight to build a palette for an individual room or as a story for their home.  Colour families have the added advantage of being able to work with each colour within the whole group of shades.

The Maps of Colour are available from 22nd July 2024. Customers will receive a printed map with any paint chart order, alternatively they can download a copy from www.atelierellis.co.uk.

All Atelier Ellis paints can be ordered directly from www.atelierellis.co.uk or by visiting the Atelier Ellis townhouse or factory in Bath.

Notes to Editors

Atelier Ellis makes beautiful, breathable, bio-based paint to help people tell the story of their home. Founded by Cassandra Ellis in 2018, Atelier Ellis is a human-scale business that looks for reminders of humanity in everything they do.

An independent maker of colour, Atelier Ellis formulates, produces, and sells their exceptional quality paint from their Somerset factory and Bath townhouse store. The paint collection reflects a new classicism that is neither minimalist nor traditional. Embracing a gracefully joyful aesthetic, the 120 unique colours are deeply rooted in the natural world, as well as personal memories, marks, and fragments.

Inspired by the way we live in nature, in cities and society, the distinctive shades are designed to create quiet, joyful backdrops to people’s homes and lives, helping them tell their unique stories of home in the way they choose. The water based, deeply pigmented colours create safe and beautiful homes.

In Spring 2024, Atelier Ellis elevated their True Matt Emulsion to a unique bio–based formula.

The new, renewable binder is created from bio-based materials including vegetable oil produced from waste, castor oil, linseed oil, sugar and bio ethanol. It improves both the materiality and performance of our already exceptional quality, virtually VOC free and fully breathable paint. It is exceptionally matt and clean smelling. Suitable for lime and gypsum plaster, it is washable and safe for all rooms, including kitchens, bathrooms and children’s spaces. It doesn’t need specialist primers and can be used as its own mist coat, removing the need for hybrid products.
